Owning a Cell Phone: What Options do I have?

When it comes to owning a cell phone, there are several options to consider before signing a contract. Before getting into a contract that can involve expensive monthly fees and disconnection fees, take a few things into consideration first before making a decision. Here is a look at some cell phone options.

Get Into a Contract

One option available for owning a cell phone is to sign a contract with a mobile phone carrier. There are several different companies to choose from that offer a variety of plans and phones. Some things to take into consideration before signing a contract are how much the monthly charge is with all the taxes and fees as well as what sort of deposit and connection fee they may charge. Most customers are not aware if they have less than perfect credit they may be required to come up with a huge down payment or pay out-of-pocket for their cell phone. Others believer they are getting charged a certain monthly fee only to discover later on after they have already signed a contract that they are getting charged much more or they incur hight overage fees because their cell phone packages only include a certain amount of minutes or data. It is important to read through the whole contract and ask questions up front so there are no hidden surprises.

Try Prepaid Phones

Prepaid phones are an excellent option for those who are considering getting a mobile phone and is becoming more and more common. There are several benefits with getting a prepaid phone. These phones are great for those who are not sure how many minutes they will use or those who only plan on using their cell phones in emergency situations. For those who enjoy all the extras, there are a multitude of phones that offer the same features as traditional phones. Users have the ability to pick from high-tech, durable phones that allow them to search the web, text message, check their email, watch movies as well as almost any other feature they want. Many of these phones also include data packages so users can still search the web. One of the biggest perks of getting one of these phones is there are no contracts to worry about and no credit checks. Users get exactly what they pay for and they do not have to worry about any overage fees.

Fax machine in my office (Photo credit: Nathan Rein)

Your fax machine has been in your office for years. You know how to work it, and you use it all the time. It takes up quite a large real estate on your desk, and feeding papers into it takes time. As useful as you may think it is, the time has come to get rid of your old fax machine.?

Faxing Revamped

New technology has made faxing easier, while spending less money. Online fax services can do all the work for you. For the longest time, the only thing you could not do on your computer was fax. When online faxing was introduced, there were certain companies that did not accept an email fax. However, the new online faxing services provide full fax services.

Online Faxing is Easy

An online faxing service offers you the ability to fax right from your desktop. It is a service that you can sign up for, such as online fax services from Metrofax. You pay a monthly fee and then send all your faxes through it. Once you sign up, you can email your documents to your fax service with the number where they are to be sent, and the service takes care of the rest, all the while keeping track of your documents.

Online Faxing will Save you Time

There are times when your fax machine is not working, or perhaps you don’t even own a fax machine. Faxing always meant trips to the nearest fax servicing store, if there was one in your vicinity. It meant taking the time to drive somewhere and waiting for the clerk to fax your documents, and then waiting for the confirmation that your fax was received. With online faxing, you do not even have to leave your seat.

Online Faxing will Save you Money

Online faxing services are not expensive. You never have to reload the paper, or have your fax machine serviced. All the maintenance is taken care of. Also, you will never have to replace an ink cartridge, plus getting rid of your old fax machine will free up space on your desk.

Technology Makes it Great

Once you subscribe to the service, anyone connected to your computer can use the service. The online fax services can also be accessed from your laptop and your smart phone. You can send or receive faxes in this way, putting all of your faxing needs right at your fingertips.

With the amazing new technology of online fax services, there is no need to clutter your office with fax machines, drive to a fax service store, or even add more tasks to your busy day. Online faxing will make your daily fax load one less thing to worry about.

Mobile gambling is, without a doubt, one of today’s most popular forms of entertainment. It gives people unlimited access to any casino game from their mobile phones, thus allowing them to play to their hearts’ content. The biggest appeal of using mobile devices to place bets lies in higher jackpots and payouts as well as the convenience of playing any game whenever, wherever.

What are some of the best casino games that you can play on your mobile phone or tablet computer?

Video Poker and Keno

In mobile gambling, strategy games such as Jacks or Better offer a whole new dimension. Advanced software programs for these games will make you feel like you are playing in a real casino. Keno is also popular because it is very easy to play, and it can provide you with hours of pure pleasure. Roulette is also one of the first casino games that most players think of downloading when looking for exciting games for their mobile devices.

Slots

Since the advent of the Internet, anyone can already play slots in the privacy and comfort of their home. Video slots and three-reel machines are only two of the most popular games that belong to this category. Those who are willing to take big risks just to hit the big jackpot also prefer playing progressive jackpots. With many bonus features and exciting themes, the game of slots has become the number one choice for both beginning and professional gamblers.

These are only some of the most popular casino games that you can play on your tablet PC or mobile phone.
The hard part is over: deciding between smartphones and trying to find the one that best suits you can be a lot of work. Now that that’s out of the way and you have a shiny new phone, it’s time to have some fun with it. Mobile phones aren’t just for talking anymore; they’re now akin to tiny personal computers, even equipped with operating systems and software. That means, unlike your old phone, you’re not confined to talking and playing Solitaire. There’s a whole world of amazing software just for your new phone; time to go and explore it.

First Things First: Apps

Most people don’t normally think ‘software’ when they want to trick out their phone; they think ‘apps’. Well, apps (aka applications) are software, but the name conjures up more exciting things than, say, anti-virus protection. There are hundreds of thousands of apps out there, made by everyone from major software developers to your little brother. Apps can turn your smartphone into a mini arcade, an organizational arsenal or a personal library. Take a look at some of these fantastic options, then go discover a few of your own:

Cut the Rope. If Angry Birds is getting a little old, how about branching out? This addictive game stars Om Nom, a hungry little monster with a serious sweet tooth who needs your help fulfilling his candy cravings.

ShopSavvy. Anyone who likes shopping or just likes finding bargains will want to check out this app. With it, you can compare prices from store to store, find out about sales and even buy stuff.

Evernote. This fabulous app is like your second brain — the one that remembers everything you tell it. Record ideas, take notes, capture images, record spoken ideas and thoughts, and then access them all in a snap.

Blogger. No more lapsed entries! Keep up with your blog no matter where you are with this app. The slide out QWERTY keyboard on the Samsung Transfix by Cricket makes typing entries sans actual computer a breeze.

iTookThisOnMyPhone. Photos and phones? A natural and convenient pairing! Share the pics you take in one fell swoop with this app, which lets you upload them onto photo-sharing sites such as Facebook.

Updates: That Other Software

While certainly not as exciting as apps, there is another area of software that’s worth checking out: updates. Just like your web browser, phone software sometimes needs an adjustment to improve performance. Keep an eye out for updates and check them out — you want your new phone to stay in tiptop shape, right?

Computer downloading is how many people get their music, movies, business information, and personal information. Downloading has replaced the purchase of CD’s, to the point that music stores are nearly extinct, and the mail service has decreased because people can download bill pay information, all for free.

Changing the Way We Do Business

Businesses have changed the way they operate because they can simply download new applications and software for their specific industry. It has also affected the way businesses invest and research new opportunities. One such example is the UFX Markets Trading that can now be completed online.

Downloads are also the number one way hackers and viruses can breach a system. For businesses, this can be a cause of corporate espionage or stealing ideas. Luckily though, there are safety downloads to prevent this from happening. This is in the form of security software and firewalls that usually come standard on all machines.

Staying Legal

The other problem with downloading, if not done properly, is that pirating may become an issue. During the 1990′s Napster allowed people to download music for free. Based on the IP address, music companies were able to track who was able to download music, regardless of who actually did it, they based their assumptions on the owner of the IP address. Monitoring downloads on your computer can help deter issues with those that want to download illegal material.

Downloading is always fun, but making sure it is done right and safely is the key to ensuring a happy computer experience.

The music industry would have us all believe that when people download music without paying for it the world is on the brink of having nothing the entire economy collapse. By contrast, a lot of people who do the illegal downloading would compare their quest for music to simply finding artifacts on the beach that were discarded by an ancient civilization. Is it wrong to download copyrighted music?

On the one hand, you have people who think we live in some kind of cyberpunk world where major corporations are doing terrible things and our best way to get back at them is to undermine their profits. While most people have no such glorious ideals, the majority thinks that these are wealthy companies who won’t be harmed by the use of their music. Some even suggest that the sales of music by artists whose work is highly downloaded are actually better than that of artists who aren’t pirated.

Naturally, record companies are vehemently opposed to the entire idea that someone might be getting their products for free. They want the illegal downloaders to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and possibly even imprisoned for their crimes. While this isn’t exactly practical, they do have good reason to feel this way. Music is a business just like any other, and the people who work in it make their money through selling a product. Illegally downloading music is wrong because the downloaders are stealing from people who need to sell in order to live.

For one thing, these types of downloads carry all kinds of potential for viruses and other malicious code. While it might not seem like a problem for most people, this kind of code can turn a quick and agile computer into a zombie doing the work of criminals on the other side of the world. While China may or may not be the home of these criminals, allowing Chinese servers to let such downloads pass through them or their software and other files be hosted on them tends to result in serious problems for law enforcement.

Considering all of the problems typically associated with illegal downloading, it makes one wonder how any country can allow them to go on at the extent they are in China right now. The only possible reason one could imagine China doesn’t tighten up more about intellectual property is the desire to allow their economy to continue growing at its rapid clip. The rapidity of this growth has opened up loopholes of this nature, and closing them will help China to work along with the rest of the world in easing up on the crimes illegal downloading contributes to.

The legality of downloading movies without paying for them is pretty cut and dried. It basically boils down to theft of someone else’s intellectual property by an individual who knows what they’re doing. The idea is, why is taking someone else’s intellectual property a bad thing? If everybody illegally downloaded their movies it would naturally bankrupt the studios and lead to their being no more movies, but an occasional download should be okay. At least, that’s the theory.

On the other hand, one must argue that the reason movies were originally put online was so people could share them, much the way they share YouTube videos with their friends. While this isn’t legal, it does at least provide a more apologetic purpose for this downloading. Of course, one also has to consider the possibility that the downloaded movie can serve to act as free advertising for the extra features that can only be found when one actually buys the movie in question.

While the studios can always try, they can’t sue everyone who illegally downloads movies every so often. While they might want to, this just isn’t practical for them. The best ways to keep illegal downloading from happening as often would be to make movies in a format that can’t be transferred into an online medium. On the other hand, it might actually be best if these movies were simply legalized, allowing anyone to download whatever movies they wanted. While it might hurt the studios who produce them, it might make independent filmmakers more able to compete on the global stage.

For almost a decade there’s been a huge problem with illegal pirating, also known as illegal downloading. The music industry was the most with album sales going down drastically during the past 10 years.

Lately the music industry is hammering down much stricter copyright laws and anyone getting caught downloading music illegally will have a harsher punishment.

Kissinsights.com dedicates itself in providing information on how illegal downloading is affecting the music industry. Here is some information on what illegal downloading is doing to the industry.

Lower Album Sales

There’s no denying that album sales have gone down drastically during the past decade. The sales started to decline when downloading from websites like Napster, Kazaa and Limewire became popular.

There’s been research done in 2001 to back up claims that illegal downloading has caused a 20 percent decrease in sales. In 2007, however, studies have shown only a decrease of about 0.7 percent.

Connection Between CD Sales & Illegal Downloading

While there might be a big connection between CD sales declining and illegal downloading, it doesn’t mean that pirating has caused this decline. While music sales are going down, there’s been an increase in sales for DVDs, movie rentals and computer games.

Legal Punishments

If caught downloading anything illegally there will be harsh punishments you will have to face. In July 2009, the RIAA charged an unidentified person for pirating and got fined more than $650,000 for downloading and sharing music. According to reports he only shared about 30 songs and got hit with a large fine.

Many people enjoy downloading music. Whether it’s the rush of downloading illegal music or getting a ton of free songs, more people are turning to these illegal programs to get free music.

Here are the risks of downloading music illegally.

Consequences

It’s against the law to download and share copyrighted music with other people. Anyone caught downloading and sharing music illegally could be prosecuted and face up to five years in jail as well as a fine of around $150,000 per song downloaded. The artists you downloaded from could also add civil damages to the lawsuit.

Computer Problems

With downloading you don’t really know where the music is coming from. There’s always that risk of getting a nasty virus on your computer. P2p programs like Limewire, Kazaa and BitTorrent are sure to contain multiple viruses and using these programs will put your computer at risk. When you computer gets a virus, you can lose your files and experience a slow Internet connection among other different problems.

Safety Issues

Most families share one computer so when you download music there’s a chance that your children be exposed to adult-natured content. In 2010 there was a study by Netmums in the UK where one in 10 children were exposed to adult content that was a result in illegally downloading.

Many file-sharing programs allows people to chat with others. With chat rooms you never know who is in there. It’s best to chat with others on safe sites like kissinsights.com. Many bullies and pedophiles lurk in the chat rooms for the sole purpose of looking for young children.

Remember the saying “it’s all fun and games until someone gets caught?” this saying sums of illegal downloading perfectly. It might be fun getting free music, but it won’t be when you’re caught.

When most people think about computer addictions, they picture a hardcore gamer sitting in a dark room, drinking Red Bull until they’re wired to explode, all the while blasting their way through a wall of virtual enemies. Some people have become so addicted to computer games that their health suffers, just as does that of drug addicts and drunks. That seems an outlandish statement until one digs into the associated headlines. In Asia, several people have been found dead in front of computer terminals. The reason? They gamed to death, playing for 70+ hours straight, while depriving their bodies of the care required for health, such as proper food and hydration. With pulses pounding and adrenaline flowing freely, these people succumbed to a tragedy.

But that’s the most visible form of computer addiction, obvious to any who examine the details. But for every outlandish death that occurs in this fashion, there are hundreds of other people whose addiction to the digital world is far less apparent. They’re around you everywhere that you go – look at the person apparently glued to their smartphone, or the person who can’t leave their house without a laptop for fear they won’t be able to check their email account.

Even people who use a computer all day at work can begin to exhibit signs of confusion when separated from their computers. Although they are not addicts in the classic sense of seeking out pleasurable behavior, their selection of jobs that require constant computer use satiates their growing digital need. They may be hard to spot, but cyber addicts are a growing class.

You want to download the newest song but aren’t familiar with the site you’ve stumbled upon. Should you attempt to download that favorite song anyway? Here are some things to watch for.

Rather than randomly searching for your song via Google, find a site that caters to legal music downloads. These sites have links to each artists’ website as well as more links to legal music downloads.

Wikipedia has a list of classical music to download, and the music comes free! Other sources to try: Funky 16 Corners that plays old-time blues and Benn Loxo, a site where you can download African music. Other site options include iTunes, Creative Commons 365 Project and MP3.com.

Research blogs related to the subject of legal music downloads. Bored at Uni is one such place.

Try sites that use KISS Insights on their front page. KISS Insights allows the reader the opportunity to ask questions of the site owner in real-time. Unlike email, where you must wait for an answer, sites that use widgets like these can give the reader an instant answer to their music question.

Talk to friends and relatives and find out where they go legally for their music. Ask questions and find out where and why they get their music from a particular site. Be ready to hear illegal stories too.

Check out the news; find out the latest and greatest sites offering free and inexpensive music downloads.

Don’t get stuck and worried about an illegal downloading experience. Legal music downloads are easy to find if you do a bit of research.

Have you ever tried to save money from your paychecks every month just to find that you’ve spent more than you earned instead? It’s really easy to do if you just say you want to do it but you don’t form a plan. The best way to be sure you save money rather than spending is by setting a budget.

Budgets help you to really analyze your expenditures and see where you’re spending in excess; maybe you go out to lunch too often or buying to many grand lattes. Whatever it is, you’ll be able to see it with the proper budget. Personal finance software can help you to create a budget that is realistic, but is within your means.

What’s great about finance software is it can connect to your online banking institution and pull the information from it into the software where it can be dissected and analyzed. This will help you see where you’re spending your money so you can be wise in how you’re spending your money. With the proper savings, you’ll be able to use the money to invest in UFX Markets Trading, so you can invest the money and help it to grow.

One thing to remember, however, when setting a budget is to not be too strict. You want to spend less money than you earn so you can save, but be sure you have some money for fun. Otherwise you’ll never stick to your budget and are more likely to overspend (compare it to being on a strict diet. You won’t be able to stay on the diet for very long).

Many people have heard about illegal downloading, but many might not know much more. Downloading music is a quick and easy way of getting music online… if you’re doing it legally.

While you’re getting illegal music for free, many record companies and artists are affected negatively by your actions. Kissinsights.com has sections where you can go and chat about illegal downloading.

Here’s some information on downloading music illegally.

How it’s Done

Music is downloaded using torrents or p2p (peer-to-peer) programs. If you buy your music via iTunes then you’re protected and safe from getting hit with a lawsuit for downloading illegal music.

Misconceptions About Downloading

There are a few misconceptions about downloading. If you have a kid under the age of 18 you are liable if they’re ever caught downloading music illegally.

If you are just streaming music on the Internet you are not stealing copyrighted music. The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) says you are still breaking the law if you’re just downloading the music and not distributing it.

Punishment

There are large fines and even some jail time for those caught downloading music illegally. Anyone charged with illegal downloading could get fined for $150,000 for each song you got illegaly.

Back in 2009 a Minnesota woman got hit with a hefty fine of $1.9 million for downloading 24 songs. Around that same time four men were sentenced to jail for a year because of their role in sharing the music.

Downloading music might seem cool because you’re getting free music, but it won’t be worth it when you’re hit with a hefty fine or given jail time.

The Internet has opened stock trading and UFX Markets Trading to many who had no access to it previously. It used to be that you had to hire a stock broker in order to invest money in the stock market. Nowadays you can become your own online trading broker by using firms such as Charles Schwab and investing your money how you feel it would do the best.

If you decide to go this route, realize that you’ll need to do a lot of research in order to know where you’ll be successful. This is why many people hire brokers or financial advisors to invest for them — they don’t want to take the time to figure it out. But for those who like to feel in control of their own money, researching and investing are part of the territory. If you find a trusted source for information, such as investing publications, then you’ll be able to learn for yourself where you should invest your money.

Many of these investing websites provide software that can help you keep track of your investments. If that software is too basic, you can find programs for a small fee that are great at tracking your money. Some of these programs can connect to your investment profiles and will update when you open the program showing you how your investments are doing and what the trends have been for your stocks.

Investing in stocks can be a great way to earn money in the long run.

Let’s be fair here: not to make light of the illegality of the pirating problem, but are musicians and bands truly suffering from all those illegal downloads that occur? Thanks to broadband internet connections and the ease of use with MP3′s, music suddenly seems to be disappearing off the ever-so-standard CD rack without shelling out a single dime. The same goes for other mediums, such as film — DVDs, Blu-Rays, and the formats that go with it such as MP4′s, DivX, etc. etc. — and even e-books, since that technology is hitting the literary industry in a big way now.

It’s still breaking the law — but take a good look at the entertainment industry, at all these celebrities and the dough they rack just from one film. Are they really hurting? All those single downloads — do they really make that much of an impact? Are the movie theaters suffering? You’ve got movies still making millions, if you check up on the ratings. Visit sites like softwareindustry.org and see for yourself some of the opinions; make your own decision –

Are these celebrities complaining? Aside from the obvious Napster maelstrom about a decade ago when Lars Ulrich of Metallica threw a fit over the free downloads of music, any other artists crying over the fact that they lost $500, $600 in their royalties of over a million? Probably not. They’re sitting in their million-dollar homes reaping their benefits regardless.

That being said, illegal downloading is still, well, illegal. But if you happen to get your hands on an illegal copy of anything, don’t panic. Just don’t start selling the stuff yourself!

Yes, the songwriters, actors, authors, producers, directors, musicians, and bands out there aren’t exactly crying at the fact that someone has downloaded a few dozen singles or books or films illegally on the internet, but let’s face the facts, the undisputed facts:

Illegal downloading is against the law. It sounds a bit redundant to say that, of course; but, hey, it doesn’t stop many from doing it. It’s a pretty hot topic — just check some sites like softwareindustry.org to see for yourself!

Forget the fact that it honestly takes away from an artist’s hard work and devotion. Think about how it affects producers, engineers, retailers, CD manufacturers, and distributors. Illegal downloading raises the price of CDs to offset the low sales volume. The drop in sales also can affect employment and promotions. You like concerts? Watch the number of them decrease — all because of illegal downloading.

To make it worse, piracy is that much harder — thanks to DRM technology. It’s designed to control how the music is passed from person to person — for example, the number of times a song can be burned onto a CD, which software that can be used to play the songs, and limiting access to only subscriptions such as iTunes or Rhapsody.

You’re looking at a consequence of six years in jail and fines of up to $150,000 — all because you downloaded one song illegally. That’s pretty steep.

But it’s true. And undisputed. So here’s the moral of the story: don’t do it, save yourself and the music industry the trouble.

So let’s say you’re in your car riding to the movie theater to see the next “Step Up” film, and you’re listening to your favorite radio station (that is, if you don’t already have an iPod plug-in for listening to your very own playlist!). Everything’s cool, the breeze is blowing, you got the air conditioning running, the window’s slightly open, your shades are on….

And then the radio station plays this awesome song! There’s one problem, though: you don’t know the name of the song, or who the song is from! And don’t you just hate it when the DJ doesn’t even bother to mention the name of the song or the singer or band?

Nowadays you can purchase songs right from your phone if you have an internet connection. If not, you go right to the computer or laptop and get it right there! It’s a piece of cake. But if you don’t know the song and you love it, you’ll never see it in your own playlist, you’ll never play it on your iPod or MP3 player. Ever.

There is a savior to your situation, though! It’s called Content Recognition Software. Look it up on softwareindustry.org for more information. It’s the real thing!

The software acts like fingerprint technology. You can actually put your phone close to any speaker playing any song, tap into your Content Recognition Software on the phone, and the technology will instantly pull up all the information you need! — artist, title, even a link to buy the song immediately.

How’s that for convenience?

Most people now days get their songs and music from the Internet, however, not everyone does this legally. With so many different options, it’s hard to tell what is illegal and what isn’t. You have to pay for most legal sites, however, there are some free ones out there. There are also sites that pretend to be legal, so watch out for these as well.

If you are not sure about a site, don’t use it. The best way to download music legally is to use the well-known sites such as iTunes and mp3.com. For these sites you can choose your payment method. The two most popular methods are subscription and pay per download. Subscription is when you pay per month and you get unlimited downloads. If you download a ton of music, you may want to go with this option. If you just want a few songs here and there, you may want to choose the pay per download option. However, the price of each song and depending where you get it from can vary.

When choosing a site to get your music from, make sure you are choosing carefully. Sometimes, when a site goes out of business, the music that you put on your computer from that site may cease to work as well. ITunes is the most well known site and is probably the safest place to get music. Also, if you are not sure if a site is legal or not, do a search in google or another search engine and it will usually tell you whether or not the site is safe to use.

Software piracy does not only affect a few people, it affects everyone. This can hurt the economy and also cause harm to your computer. There are many things you can do as an individual to help stop piracy. There is an agreement on every software product called EULA (End User License Agreement). Read this agreement whenever you purchase any kind of software and it will tell you how you can legally use it.

Whenever you purchase any CD software, make sure you are getting it from an authentic manufacturer. Whenever you purchase software downloads, only purchase them directly from the manufacturers website. Do not let anyone install your software on his or her computer. This is called softlifting and is a very common form of pirating. You can prevent people from doing this by registering your software.

One of the biggest things you can do to help stop piracy is reporting it if you either purchase software that is not authentic or you suspect the seller is not selling authentic software. Whenever you purchase software, it is a good idea to keep your receipts and packaging so you have proof of purchase should you need it.

There are also things companies can do to stop piracy as well. Make a software policy for all the employees and include rules on how they can use the software. Learn about your company’s software licenses and lean if the employees are allowed to install these at home. Also, keep a record of all the software the employees use.

Downloading music illegally is becoming a bigger problem every year in the United States. Getting music for free (even though it is illegal) can be very tempting. Many people continue to download music illegally even though they know it is a punishable offense.

The first thing you do to stop this habit is to delete all of your illegal software of your computer. These can be Lime Wire, Bear Share, Frost Wire and Kazaa. Learn about all the different legal sites and choose one of these ones to get your music from. Itunes is one of the most famous places for downloading music legally. They even offer free music every week. There are also sites that allow you to listen to the radio for free with limited commercials. Pandora is one of these websites.

Remind yourself daily that downloading music illegally is wrong and there is a consequence. Remind yourself of the consequences every time you get tempted to download something illegally. Also, it is helpful if you have a friend who can help you stop the habit. Inform them that you are trying to stop downloading music illegally and ask them to help you.

Remember that illegally downloading music is an offense that you will regret if you get caught. If you get caught, you will be fined. The number of people who illegally download music is increasing every year. Not only are you putting yourself at risk, but you are hurting the economy as well. It is worth giving it up.

You probably have friends that do it. Thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people do it each year. But, downloading music illegally from the Internet is not okay and can land you in a lot of trouble. When you download music illegally, you almost never have to pay for the music.

Both you and the site that is hosting the illegal files can be in lots of legal trouble for partaking in illegal downloads. It’s an area of the law that officials take seriously. And, don’t think that you can argue ignorance, it’s not a defense that’s been well received by the courts. The best policy is to never download illegally. It can be difficult to tell whether you’re downloading legally or illegally. If you’re paying for the music and it’s a large well-known site, more than likely you’re in the clear. The site usually has official policies listed on the blog and will list copyrights to the music. If the site is poorly designed, that can be a sign that the download is illegal. Also, if the music is free be suspicious and proceed with caution.

If you download music illegally, you could face a large fine. If you distribute that music the fine might be even larger. You can also be sent to jail for illegal downloads and distributions.

Whenever you download music from the Internet, make sure that the site is legitimate and that you have permission to download the music or risk facing stiff fines and even jail time.

The number of websites offering illegal pirated software for sales numbers in the millions. As consumers it is easy to be mislead by these websites. We often think we are purchasing the real thing when in reality the products being offered are copies. It is also common to make a purchase on one of these illegitimate sites and then never receive the product, or any kind of refund.

In order to keep from getting fooled by one of these sites, there are a few things you can do. With just a few steps and an awareness of the problem you can be a safer internet shopper.

Know that not everyone is honest. There are millions of people trying to sell counterfeit software all over the internet. Look at everything with a critical eye and don’t accept any website at face value.

Get complete company information before you make a purchase. This means a complete address including a street address, phone numbers, and a full business name. If they are unwilling to give this information they are probably not legitimate.

Find out about their return policy along with their service policies and their warranty policy.

Check into the price of the software you are purchasing. If a website is offering a price that is extremely lower than the average price, then it is probably not a legitimate copy.

Be wary of special deals, liquidation sales, or strange aquisition sales. Scammers often use these types of marketing schemes that draw consumers in and then sell them an illegitimate product.

Know what you are buying. The more you know about the product the better off you are. Read reviews about the software and about the selling your are considering buying from.

If there is any doubt, contact the software company itself. You should be able to find information about the developer of the software. If you contact them you can find out what is legitimate and what is not.

When you download a software program from the Internet, you take a a risk. Computer software downloads can contain viruses that can harm your computer. Fixing such a virus can be time consuming and/or costly. The best thing to do is to avoid getting the virus in the first place.

Make sure you have anti-virus software on your computer. A few companies even offer this software for free. Also make sure the software is current with current updates. If it isn’t current, make sure to update it. And, update it whenever the software recommends you do. Also make sure that the software is on and that it’s scheduled to run daily scans of your machine. Without this protection, getting rid of a virus will be much harder. If the virus protection software is not up to date, the software might not protect against newer versions of software.

When downloading computer software, always look at the reputability of the site. Do not download anything illegal. Not only many you face federal fines and you might be arrested, but you also run a higher risk of a virus. Sites that aren’t reputable are more likely to have programs with viruses. To check the reliability of a site, check to see if you can find more information by searching the site name. Also look at the site design, poorly designed sites are more likely to be spam sites with unverified software downloads that contain viruses. If you download from reputable sites, you might have to pay a fee, but doing so is worth it.

By downloading computer software you take a risk. You could get a virus on your computer through these downloads. To combat computer software viruses, make sure to have anti-virus software on your program and that you run that program daily. Also make sure to pay attention to the sites from where you’re downloading. Avoid shady or suspicious sites to avoid getting viruses on your computer.

Pirating is copyright infringement. Piracy has occured for thousands of years. The Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act and the Digital Millenium Copyright Acts of 1996 lay out the federal definition of piracy and the sanctions faced by people that pirate music.

Since the start of the Interet, illegal distrubution of music has been an issue. These sites don’t charge users to download music and also aren’t authorized to distrubute the music. The DMCA made penalties for engaging in these activities stiffer. The act passed by unaniomous vote by the United States Senate in October, 1998.

The act of circumventing measures to protect copyright works, such as scrambling is also illegal. A user found doing so can face tough penalties. However, service providers are given some protection and limited liability by the Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act.

Illegal downloads cost the music industry millions of dollars, users visit sites that host these videos and download or stream the videos to home computers. Both the site hosting the illegal downloads and the individual users can face penalties that include fines and even jail time. A user has a responsibility to make sure that the site is legitimate and that the user is not breaking the law.

Legitimate music downloads usually cost money and are often found at sites like Amazon and iTunes. Users visit the illegal download sites to avoid paying fees associated with buying music, which can be from less than a dollar a song to several dollars. If a user is caught, he or she can also be kicked off of the Internet Service Provider’s services and banned from using that provider in the future.

Music piracy is distributing and creating illegal works through recording the works or circumventing copyright protection methods.

Usually when you download music legally, it costs money. Illegal downloads are free and take money out of the pockets of music and movie makers. While paying for music or movies might seem like an inconvience, it is worth it do aquire your music the legal way.

Illegal downloads can get you in legal trouble. In fact, you could face possible jail time or a large fine for this type of activity. The people that upload the illegal content and disseminate it face even stiffer penalties. You can almost always tell when a site is illegal because the movies and music are free and the site design is often poor with lots of ads and pop-up windows. Stay away from these sites. These sites are also known to be the home to viruses and other spam. The viruses in illegal downloads can seriously harm your computer. The best way to avoid these viruses is by not downloading movies or music illegally. The federal government takes such downloads seriously and has stiff penalties for people that do so.

Finding music legally is not difficult. Several sites have legal downloads like Amazon and ITunes. The prices vary for downloads on these sites. You can purchase cards to buy several songs at once. You can also visit sites that stream movies to watch movies legally. Some of these sites allow you to pay a montly fee for unlimited montly dowloads of streaming video.

When watching movies or listening to music online, make sure to do so legally through sites that provide downloading and streaming services. If you don’t download legally, you could face stiff legal fines and even jail time. You could also get a virus on your computer and encounter other spam. This risk is not worth watching a few

Pirating software and files means copying them illegally and distrubting, usually for free. Pirating costs the movie, software and music industries millions of dollars each year. Rather than paying for these services, users are simply downloading the illegal copies for free, costing the maker of that file money.

When the Internet became popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, pirating was a huge problem. Services were widely available to download movies and music and hundreds of thousands of people dowloaded songs and movies this way. Legal authorties stepped in to arrest those distributing these materials. Lawsuits shut down some of those sites hosting the illegal material and the problem because less.

However, illegal downloads are still a huge problem in this country. Users use sites, that often have files with spam and viruses attached which is also a problem. If you distribute this material, you can go to jail and face a fine. If you download and watch these files, you can also face a fine and jail time. But, still the files are widely available.

Because the more legitimate sites have shut down, the sites that are available for downloading these files are full of spam and virus files making it more dangerous to download the files. Users take a risk by doing so and should consider that.

Most of the movies that are put up on these sites are from pre-release copies that have circulated and fallen into the wrong hands or were tapped by people that saw the movie in the movie theater. Users also tape movies and shows from television and then distribute over file sharing networks and sites.

Illegal downloads cost artistic companies millions of dollars, and unfortuantely much of that cost is passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices and ticket costs. Illegal downloads don’t help anyone. In fact, people that even watch these illegal copies can face jail time for those actions.

There is so much software out there for so many different things. How do you know what will work for you and what won’t? It is tough to know what software works and what doesn’t without spending a ton of money just to find out something is junk. So many of us turn to the internet to find out from other users what they think. You should always take what you read from other people and put it into perspective, but there are also some more reliable reviews out there than others.

Here are some of the best places to go to check out how different software checks out.

CNET. CNET has been around for a while and is trusted by many when it comes to software. You can find reviews, downloads, and news from CNET. They will give you an idea of what is a good deal and what their editors choose as the best software as opposed to what their readers and users are picking. You can also find out what the best free software is.

PCmagazine. PC magazine is another reputable source of information. It offers reviews on software for security, for music, networking, and also for mobile phones. You can search for a particular software, or look a category to find what you need.

Amazon. Although Amazon is not a computer or tech specific site, there are always a ton of reviews. It is often good to have a large number of reviewers giving their opinion on something you can look at it from several points of view. If a particular software product has many reviewer saying the same thing about it either good or bad, you can base your decision on this. Just keep in mind that many of the reviewer may not have any kind of technical or computer based background.

When reading reviews keep in mind that opinions from other people are just opinions. Try to just take the facts and apply the good and the bad to what you really need.

Business management software is a necessary part of starting up and running a small business. Many small business owners do not want to invest the money in purchasing this kind of software or do not think it is even needed, but it has many benefits and in the long run can be a very good investment.

The basic benefits are that it can make you more effective and productive manager, and it will help you to avoid many of the legal risks involved in running a business and keep you compliant legally. A business management software has many useful tools including what you need to manage your expenses and profits, manage your staff, and if your business involves any kind of products or services it will help you manage those as well.

When looking for software you should keep a few things in mind. Since every business has its own needs make sure that whatever software you choose will meet all of those needs. It should also be easy to use. You don’t want to spend a lot of time figuring out how it works, as well as more time than is necessary to teach your people how to use it.

You should also make sure that the software offers a good source of customer support. This is essential during the initial process of setting up the system. Even software that is easy to use will have processes that you may have questions on. You want your support to be just a phone call or a keystroke away.

The right business managment software will depend largely on your type of business, the size of your businessa and your particular needs. Make sure you do your research on the different products available and even read reviews from other users to make sure it has the funtionality that you need. Compare several different products before you choose which one you will use for your business.

Microsoft word is the most used word processing software in the world. The vast number of users make many believe that it is the best you can get as far as this type of software goes. There are other options out there though, and many of them are free. Before going out and purchasing your next version of Word, take a look at OpenOffice and compare the two.

Whether or not you need Word depends mostly on what types of features you need and how many you need. OpenOffice does not necessarily have as many features as Word, but at a few hundred dollars to license each computer it is loaded on, OpenOffice just may have enough to get you what you need. It has all the most common features and everything else that is basically needed for basic office functions.

The basics of OpenOffice include a word processing and text editing function along with a spreadsheet and the ability to create presentations. In reality, it could even replace PowerPoint. This suite of administrative tools also includes a database manager, a drawing tool that includes tools for creating flowcharts and even 3-D pictures, and a program for math. The math tool can be used to create equations and formulas.

One of the limitations of Openoffice is that is does not have the capability of saving files in some of the more up to date file formats such as DOCX. If something like this is necessary for your day to day work or school, you will need to go out and buy Word.

There are some definite advantages to using an open-source software. The main advantage being the freedom to use it for any purpose on any computer. It can also be redistributed without worrying about licensing fees. It also gives its users the right to modify the software and even use parts of it in different programs.

If you have a small business or are thinking about starting a small business there are a few different types of software you should think about having. The kinds of software needed for a small business are different from those that are needed for large business. 15 to 20 years ago you would have had to search high and low to find any kind of software that would be useful for a small business, but now there are several companies that specialize in developing it.

There different kinds that you might find useful are that for accounting and finance, a customer relations database, productivity tracking, and web conferencing software.

When it comes to accounting, the software you choose needs to be pretty basic, at least in the beginning. You will probably want it to automate several of your processes and simplify your reporting. It should also keep you from having any kind of compliance issues.

A customer relationship management software is a way to keep all of the information about your customers organized and in a place for easy access. There are several companies that offer this kind of software for large businesses. It can be designed with several different functions. For a small business, it should basically start as just a customer contact system. There are some lite versions that are developed for companies that have less than 50 employees.

There are not many businesses out there both big and small that don’t have an office suite. Microsoft office is the most widely used, but it is not the only one. What you need to look for is a software that offers word processing, spreadsheets, and a program that can be used to make presentations. E-mail is also a necessity these days.

Web conferencing is becoming a very popular way of communicating with groups of people. It makes it easy to present ideas and instructions to clients and employees without having to be in the same area.

You may have heard the term CRM tossed around in conversation but are not sure exactly what it is and why you would need it. If you are a business owner with any kind of customer base, it is a tool that can make your life easier and your business run much smoother.

In general CRM or Customer Relations Management Software is a database that can be used to store and organize information about your customers. It can be as general as just a tool to keep contact information, to as in depth as a analytical tool for reporting. How you use it will depend on your needs as a business owner, but it useful not matter what the size of your business is.

CRM software can take information from several different sources and integrate it into one report. This type of information gathering used to take days or even weeks for employees to gather, but with CRM software reports can be run with just a few clicks of the mouse.

If you are looking into CRM software for your business there are a few things to keep in mind. First, it should be a program that is web-based. This makes sharing information much easier. It should also offer access that is unlimited. A good system should also have several different kinds of formatting devices. You should be able to generate spreadsheets, reports, and even word processing docs. Look at the types of reports it can generate to make sure it has the capabilities that you need. If your company needs advanced graphics, make sure it can do more than just a simple graph.

Collecting and analysing data is becoming more important than ever in a competitive business market. With more and more companies using analytical tools to keep them afloat, you want to make sure you are in the game, and that you stay in the game.

Internet piracy is a growing concern among many software development companies. There are many different types of internet piracy, but software is the number one product sold illegally online. There are many instances where the buyer does not even know that they are purchasing an illegal copy of software, with many websites leading consumers to believe they are buying a legitimate product.

Internet piracy is any use of the internet to sell, distribute, or even adversise software that has been pirated. One of the reasons it is such a big problem is because it is so easy to do. The internet can be access by anyone, and it is not difficult to set up a website that may appear legitimate. It is often extremely difficult for users to tell the difference between a well developed website that is not a real business and the real thing.

Since it is so easy to do, and it is making those who are doing it a lot of money, internet piracy has grown significantly in the past few years. Auction sites and other websites with pirated software for sale are popping up all over. There are some estimates that say there are millions of these illegitimate sites out there. Another concern is that these sites will often take consumers money and then never deliver the product with no chance of any kind of refund.

The best way to protect yourself against internet piracy to to educate yourself and to be aware. You should always be cautious when your are buying software on the internet. Make sure you look for signs of piracy before making a purchase, and always check to make sure you can verify the legitimacy of the website or the company you are purchasing from.

A big concern for many parents is keeping their kids safe when they are on the internet. In addition to keeping a close eye on them when they are on the computer, and using the parental controls on your computer, there is also software available that you can use to keep their browsing safe.

There are a few different types of software depending on the age of your children. For older kids the software will still allow your children to use the same browser as the adults, but it will block websites that are not appropriate for their age group. There are some that also will either block or monitor chat rooms, and even set time limits on how long they are on the internet.

If you have young children who want to use the computer there is also software available that will change the browser. These browsers make using the computer very simple for the youngest users. Since they are designed for children as young as just 2 years old they will often have just a few big buttons to click on and they limit the kids to just certain websites.

Peanut Butter PC is one of the most basic browsers for children. Parents have complete control of the websites their children can access because they have to actually add sites to their browsers to make them available. Hoopah Kidview and Noodlenet are browsers that only allow children to access educational content as well as age appropriate content.

It is possible to keep your kids safe while they are on the internet, you just need to take the necessary steps.

To download or not. This debate has been going on for years, with the amount of free downloads available growing every day. There are definitely two distinct opinions on how illegally downloading music or downloading music for free is affecting the music industry. The people in the music industry see it as a huge problem and are fighting for copyright laws to be more strict, and for the punishment for pirating music to be harsher.

The recording industry believes that every time someone downloads music for free the music industry is losing a sale. The amount of lost revenue according to the Recording Industry Association of America is in the billions each year. Not only is the recording industry losing money, but the individual artists are as well. Many people may believe that successful recording artists don’t need the money since they are making millions each year anyway, but they are putting in the work to create the music. They are entitled to the money that should be made from consumers buying it. If they continue to not get paid for their work, they may get discouraged from creating more. It also may discourage new artists from trying to break into the business.

On the other side, there are people that believe that downloading music from the internet is actually increasing sales of music. It could increase the exposure that artists get that they may not get otherwise. Unknown artists could be getting exposure from free downloads since consumers don’t have to pay to try out their music. The word can then spread, and then others will purchase the music legitimately.

Just like there is a big debate about whether sharing music is hurting the recording industry, there is also the debate about whether or not software piracy is hurting the software industry. Of course those who are pirating the software think that they are not hurting anyone, and that the software companies are not losing any money because of it. They say that those who pirate software are not people who would buy it anyway so they are not causing any harm.

Although this is a problem, the bigger problem comes in when these people steal the software and then sell it to others. When they sell the software to the public for a lower price than what the software companies are selling it for, or giving it away for free, they are costing the software companies a lot of money.

Because of this, many software companies need to make a decision on how to make the best of the situation so they don’t run out of customers. They could lower the price of their software to compete with the pirates. This may help to increase their sales, but it won’t stop those who are going to pirate. The best thing they can really do is to create a situation where their customers want to be loyal to them and not do business with pirates.

Software piracy along with other kinds of piracy is a problem that is not going away. Although industries are taking measures to try and stop it, just like other kinds of crimes, there will always be those who are going to do it. The software industry can only continue to try to minimize it and put out a good product for their paying customers.

Have you every been somewhere and heard a song that you have never heard before and loved it, but had not idea what it was, or who was singing it? A few years ago you would have had to wait until you heard it again, and hopefully it was on the radio where the DJ would announce who sang it, or on a music television station where you had to see either the beginning or the end of the song when the artist would be posted.

Things have some such a long way. You can now grab your cell phone and dial a number that will get you to your content recognition software and then hold your phone to the speakers where the song it coming from. Within just a few minutes, you will get a text with all the information you need to get the song. It will tell you the name of the artists, and it may even send you a link so you can buy it right away.

The concept behind this kind of software is similar to identifying fingerprints. The software tries to match several different sound waves to find a match to the music. Since there are different levels of how similar a match can be, users can usually set their account to only accept certain levels. This usually done as a percentage, so if there is a 90% chance that a song is a match then the information will be sent. If it is lower, then it won’t be sent.

Technology is alway improving and changing the way we listen to music. It is always interesting to see what is going to come next.

If you have ever thought about using a peer to peer file sharing site it may be worth your while to take a look at the both the risks and rewards vs. the risks and rewards of a legal music downloading website. Although the idea may seem good, and it is a cheap way to get your favorite music, you should think carefully before you try it.

The amount of music available on a peer to peer site is usually larger than on a legal site. Legal sites tend to be limited on the number of files they have to download. There is also the cost. Peer to peer file sharing is free while there are either subscription costs to belong to the website or you need to pay per download. Legal download sites also often have a limited variety of downloads. While peer to peer sites have a large variety. You can download everything from music, to TV shows, and even software.

Now this all may seem like a good argument for peer to peer vs. legal downloading, but there are some very serious risks involved in file sharing. Music sites where you need to pay are legal and you don’t need to worry about risking any copy-right laws. Peer to peer sharing sites, are not completely illegal, but there is a lot of controversy surrounding them. They are also subject to various viruses, and malware that may jeopardize your computer and your security. With legal sites you know exactly who you are getting your material from, with file sharing you never really know where it is coming from.

A good way of thinking about it is that there is really nothing in life for free. Even though you are not paying each time you download a song or a movie, you may up paying in different ways. There is also the risk of the music industry sueing you for downloading material that is restricted by copyright.

It would be surprising to know that Internet broadband connection isn’t as simple as everyone might think. The classic adage of “Broadband is Better Than Dial-up” no longer applies, because Dial-up is virtually dead! But now there are more contenders in the horizon to consider, and even more telling: all the contenders utilize Broadband as well, making the choice a little more difficult.

But with a little help, you can navigate the waters and enter the Arena, however broad it might be!

First off, here are the types of Broadband service available for your Internet:

Cable

Satellite

Wireless

DSL

Fiber Optics

Each has their own benefits and disadvantages both on the technical front and service quality front. Generally, if you want more stable service but with the hassle of installation and extra fees and most likely a higher pay premium, go Cable. Sometimes better efficiency all around including cost is included with Satellite but with the headache that sometimes the quality might drop due to positioning. When you want an easier installation deal with little problems with cords and cables, consult experts on wireless broadband and compare broadband technology. Consecutively, DSL and Fiber Optics hit a specialized niche in the Broadband market, which might help with security issues involving invaders trying to hack in your systems.

Again, the list of differences and similarities and benefits and weaknesses go on and on. So do your research on what you might need and what the best deals are. If you’re on a prime elevated spot, you actually might want to consider a Satellite connection. If you have an extensive household with multiple computers, go wireless, even if the pricing might be a little more expensive. Your quality essentially is important; but again, considers all options. You certainly don’t want headaches.

That’s a pretty big arena! So arm yourself with the pertinent knowledge, and you’ll come out alive. As everyone says, “That’s technology for you! A growing industry.”

Having an online presence is pretty much mandatory for any business these days, but there is a huge difference between an amateurishly designed web site and one that looks polished and professional. The difference between the two can be the simple manipulation of HTML.

HTML is an acronym for Hypertext Markup Language. This is a computer language used primarily for the design of websites and web content. This language, or code, is relatively easy to learn, and the basic format is to place code strings between tags. Browsers are designed to read and interpret these tags into images and data that you see when you surf the internet.

Any business, small or large, would benefit from a few HTML coding additions to their website. On the most basic level, HTML could allow for a pleasant and easy to read website or blog, and on a more advanced level, online shopping.

Even if your business isn’t selling online, you can still benefit from HTML. Tools such as a customer satisfaction survey can be easily embedded into your website along with other ways for customers to interact with your website and company. Forums, digital media, comments and surveys are all things that can be programmed into your website through the use of HTML.

Staying on the leading edge of online technology requires deft manipulation of HTML so that tools like social networking, video applications and other tools are at your customer’s disposal.

With more and more people turning to the Internet for their first glance at your business, it is important that a visitor’s first impression be just the right one in order to translate an online visit to a purchase. HTML is the key to making any website look great; it is easy to learn or you can hire a professional to design a site to your specifications.

Software programs offered by retailers are licensed to be installed on only one computer system and used by one legitimate user at a time. The action of buying the software package and installing it on a system makes the person become a licensed user. That individual is allowed to copy the software program for backup purposes, but is unauthorized to make copies for other individuals.

There are several different types of software piracy:
-	Counterfeit copies
Illegally copying software and manuals to look like the authentic with the intent to redistribute to the masses defines counterfeit piracy. These fakes are usually sold at prices below the retail value price sold by legitimate software distributors.

-	Corporate piracy
When an organization states a lesser amount of installations for software obtained through a volume purchase agreement, corporate software or end-user piracy occurs. Another form of corporate piracy transpires when software is installed on a public server with unobstructed access by unlimited staff.

-	Unbundling
Unbundling occurs when the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) bundle of software that comes with a new operating system is removed by the retailer. The retailer either sells the bundled software individually or installs for a fee to another operating system.

-	Software lifting
Also know as end-user piracy, it is defined as taking licensed software legitimately purchased and installing it on multiple computers causing the licensing agreement to be violated.

-	Internet piracy
Making software available on the Internet via downloads or files sharing for free or a fee constitutes internet software piracy.

-	Disk loading
Have you ever purchased a brand new computer system from a vendor and not receive manuals and/or the original disks for software installed on the system? Most likely you are a victim of a common practice called hard disk loading. This happens when hardware merchants use commercial software and without authorization install it on multiple systems purchased by the public.

Users beware! If you copy or download software without authorization, then you are guilty of software piracy.

Ah, the wonders of the Internet. That magical place that holds answers to questions, allows you to connect with friends, research information, shop for gifts, and download information.

Transferring a file from the Internet to your computer is called downloading. Downloading also refers to duplicating data from one source directly to your computer or other programmable device. The most common types of files downloaded are software applications, application updates, games, music, videos, and documents.

Have you ever wondered what happens when you click the mouse to download something? And what is with all the “do you trust this site” messages? Anytime you download something from the Internet to your computer, you run the risk of downloading a virus which can damage your computer and all the information on your hard drive. The purpose of the message it to provide information to help you make the decision whether to open the application, download it, cancel download, or grant permissions prior to download.

Before you download anything to your system, make sure you do the following:
-	Install an antivirus application to your system and make sure it is running. The job of the antivirus program is to scan files before they are opened and notify you instantly if potential unsafe materials are found. Make sure that your antivirus program is updated often to remain current with new malware issues.
-	Download only from reputable websites that you trust. If the site has questionable materials, the download is received from someone you don’t know, or the site asks for personal information for verification, do not download from them.
-	Be apprehensive of downloads with the file extensions of .bat, .exe, .com, .pif, or .scr. These are commonly known files that often contain viruses.

The next time you decide to download an application, take a few minutes to think about the risks and precautions you can take to safeguard your system.

Downloading music from the Internet became a popular practice when high-speed broadband became available. Musical downloads are the transfer of songs from an Internet website or P2P to a user’s system.

The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) believes illegal downloading of music is the direct cause of decreased CD sales. The consequences of unauthorized distribution of music in effect kills both the sales growth and profits thus resulting in music costing more to produce, record labels raising retail prices of CDs, and the reduction of hiring new musical talent.

Who it Impacts

First and foremost, it hurts the songwriters and recording artists who make the music. These individuals receive most of their income through royalties and depend on the royalties they get from the authorized sales of their recordings to make a living and support their families. In the end, illegal downloading guarantees that artists won’t be fully rewarded for their hard work and devotion to the craft.

Secondly, it impacts the working staff of the music industry which includes everyone from producers, engineers, retailers, manufacturers of CDs, and distributors. The lack of music sales creates unemployment, less money for developing new talent, decreased promotion of musicians, and shutdowns to music manufacturing and distribution centers.

Lastly, it impacts the music buying public who purchase music legally. Illegal downloads of music and music piracy raise the costs of CDs due to low sales volume and the accommodation made for production.

Outcomes

Songs from online music retailers are now being encoded with DRM in an effort to combat piracy. DRM is a technology that allows online retailers to control the music that is being purchased. Examples include the number of times the songs can be burned to a CD by an individual, what software the music can be played on, and limiting access to the music to only those subscribed to the service.

The RIAA have sued more than 20,000 individuals who have downloaded music illegally. Repeat offenders can spend 6 years in jail and pay an estimate of $150,000 including fines, court fees, and penalties.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) is the most universal file-sharing method used to circulate electronically stored digital media including pictures, music, movies, and TV programs. It allows computer hardware and software to function without the need for special server devices which opens the doors to risks.

-	Malware
Disguised as legitimate files to obtain access to your system, viruses, Trojans, and worms are often distributed with files shared over the Internet. They have the potential to unlock systems gaining direct access to company infrastructures, personal information, and completely destroying data.

-	Spyware & Adware
Spyware programs track computer usage and reports data to a remote location. They capture and report keystrokes, usage of sites (such as those used for online banking), reveal passwords, and obtain personal information.

Adware installs itself onto a computer and tracks browsing habits of users which allows it to populate pop up advertisements while the computer is in use. It disrupts privacy, slows down system functions, and contaminates operating systems.

-	Security/Exposure
When you upload files from a file-sharing application, you open the door to security risks and exposure to personal data. This is particularly dangerous for those who use business services like Internet faxing or online banking. Any changes made to the P2P software default settings during installation opens the door to serious issues. Inadvertently, you share information allowing other P2P users gain access into all of your folders and subfolders on your hard drive opening doors to identity theft.

-	Vulnerability
P2P networks can expose children to pornographic materials and websites exploiting children. Children searching for popular music files can inadvertently pull up links to inappropriate audio and video clips of a sexually explicit nature due to files that use the same search keywords.

-	Piracy
Many things are available on P2P networks, including games, music, and movies that are copyrighted. How does this impact you? Downloading or sharing copyrighted materials without the copyright owner’s permission can cause serious legal trouble. You could be prosecuted for violating federal law and sued for copyright infringement by the government.

Therefore users, become aware and anticipate the risks before downloading materials.

Forgot to set the recorder and missed your favorite show again? You no longer have to wait for a rerun or rebroadcast months later to catch up on missed episodes. Comparable to viewing recorded or DVR programs, viewers are turning to their computers and the Internet to catch up on the latest episodes.

However, because of the controversy over downloading music from the Internet, many people wonder “is it legal to download TV programs”? Depending on whom you ask this question, the answer is mixed.

From a copyright perspective, it is only considered illegal if certain rules are not followed. When individuals use file-sharing networks to download TV programs, the legal owners of the TV rights have the potential for lost revenue. It is suggested to stay away from P2P or other file-sharing networks for TV viewing and program downloading. From the networks perspective, it is legal to download only from the network’s website and the downloaded material is used for the sole purpose of individual viewing and is not copied, shared or sold.

If you want to download TV programming, follow these general rules which are both reliable and fairly inexpensive.

-	Go directly to television and cable-network programming web sites to watch the shows. As marketing and promotional tools, these sites air the full version of popular TV shows that can be legally download for viewing on your computer.

-	The newest trend is to purchase TV shows that you can watch on your MP3 player or on a Web-enabled mobile phone. Many major MP3 and mobile phone providers are contracting with TV networks to sell current popular TV shows to users for a small fee.

-	If you are having a hard time finding your favorite show online, consider contacting the television or studio directly. Since they want viewers to have a legal way of viewing programs, a representative from the network may be able to provide specific places to download legal copies of a show.

So the next time you miss your favorite TV program, choose one of the above options to legally and confidently download it for your viewing pleasure.

A great new song just played on the radio and you want it now. You know that you can listen or download it from the Internet, but aren’t sure from where and how to do it the right way. To legally download media or music from the Internet, it involves the exchange of files between the copyright owner of the materials and the individual end user.

Individuals new to using or downloading music to their system need to be careful of which websites to turn to and should adhere to the following:

- Utilize reputable MP3 music providers such as iTunes and Rhapsody to access previews of new music or to hear music from brand new artists. To find reputable MP3 providers, do a quick search on the Internet using the keywords “legal MP3 download sites”.

-	When searching the Internet for legal downloads, stick with only trusted sites that you know are legitimate, legal, and have less potential of giving your system a virus or other unwanted programs. Make sure you check the source of the download, where the site obtained the download, and the permissions for use of the download.

-	Want a free alternative, then log onto the Internet and find Internet radio stations. You can easily avoid the problem of illegal music downloads because radio stations, record labels , and similar web sites allow users to listen to their favorite music around the clock without any fees.

-	Use the specific instructions supplied with your media player and always download music according to the instructions supplied on the music web site you utilize.
-	Check for sites that host free and legal independent music artists, who are bands or artists breaking into the music field and trying to get noticed. Music is offered via free downloads as marketing promotions to get their name and music noticed by the industry.

If in doubt, check with the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) to ensure the site you are downloading from is legal and endorsed. An up-to-date list is maintained on the RIAA website.

Like anything in today’s world, the Internet has its good and bad points. Everyone is for the advancement of modern technology, including advancements in the way we listen to music.

Unfortunately, along with the good part about music on the Internet, comes the bad part, downloading music without paying for it. Obtaining songs by illegally downloading them is a crime, just as shoplifting is a crime.

We know it is wrong to take something that does not belong to us. Most of us would not enter a record store decades ago, find a record by our favorite artist, then stuff it in our pocket, and walk out the door without paying for it.

Yet, that is exactly what people are doing, when they illegally download a song from someone on the Internet.

The biggest problem concerning pirating music and other media from the Internet, is trying to figure out who owns that bit of music. Because there is so much information out there on the information highway, as they used to call it, people are under the mistaken impression, that everything is free. It is not.

The artist who wrote the song, the composer who put the words and music together, and the singer, who performed the song, all own the song. Their livelihood depends on the public going out and purchasing that song. It is how they make their money, just like anyone else in any other profession.

However, purchasing that CD does not give you the right to sell it or give it away to others, to copy. If ten people pay for the CD and each lend it to one friend to copy, that means twenty people now own the CD, but only ten people paid for it.

It is equivalent to stealing. It is stealing from the artists who made the CD for everyone to purchase and enjoy.

With the state our economy is in, and unemployment figures rising daily, the music industry has not escaped unscathed. Everyone who is fortunate enough to still have a job, including musical artists, need to do everything they can to prepare for the worst these days.

Stealing music by illegally downloading songs from the Internet, threatens to put those in the music profession, out of work.

When we think of performing artists, we do not consider all of those people who currently work for that artist, who depend on the sale of the artist’s music, for their income.

If the most popular rap artist begins to lose money from the sale of his or her music, it becomes difficult for all those involved in making that music, to be secure in their current occupation.

Some of the jobs created by artists in the music industry include:

- the artist’s manager
- the artist’s promoters
- the artist’s agents
- the artist’s band
- the sound check crew
- the record producers
- the publicists
- the journalists
- the art designers
- the journalists
- the art designers

These are just the ones that are involved in the day-to-day production of music.
There are others whose income depends on the artist’s ability to make money from the music they produce.

There are people who work in the radio stations where DJ’s play the artist’s music over the airways. There are people who work on websites to promote the artist’s music.

Sales of the artist’s work, affect even those who work in retail music stores. If music sales are down, retail stores need less people to sell that music.

There are other aspects, besides monetary, that illegally downloading music has an effect on. These are not visible, but just as important. These include the artists having doubts about their ability to sell their music to the people. This could discourage even the most talented in the music profession.

This type of problem caused by music piracy, affects music lovers and music makers alike.

Ever since Limewire got shutdown, people are devoting time to find alternatives in pirating music. Of course pirating is illegal but that hasn’t stopped numerous of households from illegally downloading music. People have gotten smart with bitorrents and have resorted to using them in illegally downloading a song or even an entire CD of an artist. The best thing to do to make sure you’re 100% safe from getting caught is to legally buy the music whether if you’re at a store or if you’re online. Most people are even getting taken to court by big music companies for pirating music.

There are many risks that one takes when it comes to pirating music illegally. Not only do you run a chance of getting caught, but you also run a risk of adding malicious software to your computer that you may not even know about. You can even be banned from your internet service provider as they can also submit documents proving that you have indeed been downloading music illegally. Spam has even increased lately within some of the P2P sharing software because people are looking to make money within the recession. The spam won’t really effect your computer, but if you insert some important information, you do run the risk of having your identity stolen.

Top named music companies are definitely tightening up on going after a lot of people for pirating music. This has been happening for the past decade now since the Internet has been a necessity for many households. Most people have complained how they don’t want to purchase an entire CD as they may like just one or two songs from it. Even the record companies themselves have said that even fining them doesn’t really help much, however, they are still looking into some ways they can get people to stop pirating music.

People are starting to get their music digitally now instead of going out in stores and buying them. It’s alright to do that, but just like in stores, you also have to pay for the music that you wish to download in order for you to have obtain it legally. Most people don’t understand that you can actually get caught in illegally downloading music as it has happened numerous of times. There’s even a hefty fine if you’re guilty within the court system. Most people don’t understand the risks that they’re taking even when downloading just one song because of the viruses that are out on the web nowadays.

You can easily get viruses, Trojan horses, spyware, adware, or some other malware on your computer via downloads. Limewire was a huge P2P sharing company that recently got shut down in October of 2010 because of the fact that they were illegally distributing music. Most people have already moved on to alternatives before they were caught because of the fact that they were notorious with spam and viruses. The safest place to download music is through iTunes or through the artist’s music store that some may have on their site.

Even downloading music illegally comes with the downside that the sound quality may be bad. There are times when you may not be able to hear the song as clearly then if you would’ve bought it. Some people disregard it, but if you plan on burning the song on a CD, it can really make the sound off a little. A CD usually has better sound quality than anything digital due to the bit rate. However, there are some MP3s that have better sound quality than the CD.

Corrupted files can be another issue. You may find some songs to have been mislabeled or they may not even work after you’ve downloaded the song. In order to be safe, just legally pay for it and download the song from a trusted online store such as iTunes.

Children from past generations learned from their parents that they must pay for something they want. They learned that if they wanted something badly enough, they had to work for it.

Children, who grew up with the Internet, learned that you could find almost anything you were looking for, by searching the Internet. They believe it is all free and no work is involved, except for pointing and clicking.

We know that there is an abundant amount of information that we can acquire, on any given subject. There are also enormous amounts of websites that sell the products children and adults are looking to buy. This includes music of all sorts.

Sometimes it is difficult for children to understand that there are items on the Internet that are not free. It is tempting to copy music in the same manner information is copied for research purposes. The difference is that information in the public domain is free to use. People use some information with credit given back to the original source.

Copying music is not the same and parents need to explain this difference to their children. Children might believe that it is okay for them to download music illegally because so many are doing it, and because they do not fear being caught doing so.

Besides explaining that music piracy is illegal, adults have to teach children the importance of being honest in all things. Children need to understand that illegally downloading music from others is dishonest. They need to know that it is no different than stealing an item from another person.

Simply telling a child not to do something may not be enough in the times we now live in. They need to know why they cannot do something. That is where parents come into play regarding music downloads.

Supervising children on the Internet is a great idea for many reasons. Preventing them from committing music piracy is just one of them.

With the advent of ITunes and Amazon music downloading, comes a legal and honest way for people to download their music from the Internet.

Unfortunately, ITunes and Amazon do not have the rights to sell every song ever recorded by an artist or group. This fact creates the problem of illegally downloading music from other Internet sites.

For any business to be successful business owners need to be able to sell something others want and are willing to pay for, otherwise owning a business would not be profitable.

Many people, who decide to create a business, want to come up with something unique or something appealing to the public. Music is the perfect business, because there are so many genres of music; more than enough to match the differing music interests of a large group of people.

Classical musicians can profit from selling music to people who enjoy listening to classical music. The same goes for every type of music produced.

However, it is human nature for people to take something free if they can get it, rather than having to buy it. Just like any businessperson, if a musician’s music is obtained illegally free of charge, they cannot make money off their business.

It is the same in the writing profession. If someone else copies another writer’s work and sells it as their own, or gives it away to others as if they wrote it, that is copyright infringement. That is illegal.

Illegally downloading music infringes on the musician’s copyrighted material. The artist can no longer profit from the music people are giving away.

If the artist no longer profits from making music, they may stop making music, and this hurts the artist, the fans of the artist, and the people who work for the artist.

A few ways to stop music piracy are:

- Imposing fines

- Internet Service Providers taking steps to prevent users from illegally downloading music

- Understanding that music privacy is indeed, illegal

If you spend any amount of time on the computer every day, then you can certainly appreciate the fact that those who spend time developing various systems and applications have got to have a lot of talent and expertise. Although there are many of us who would never even attempt to read a software book, there are those who get complete enjoyment from writing and developing software for the masses.

Being online all day long, whether it’s for work or play, leads you to a lot of places that ask you to do a software download to further engage the site. Knowing how to navigate through these places is very important so as to avoid computer viruses. You also want to avoid ending up on a site that is irrelevant or even offensive.

To be comfortable as you view, search and scroll the web looking for your topics of interest, you should always make it a point to read software reviews whenever they are available, especially if they are pertinent to you. Computer software changes at such an alarming rate that it’s very important to keep up with what’s going on in the industry and how those changes will affect you.

There are many sites that will give you reviews and opinions on software downloads in addition to sites where you can even purchase upgrades if you’re so inclined. Some of the reviews on the sites are from average, everyday people like yourself who just want information, and some of the reviews come from technology specialists and professionals who work directly with software development. While the consumer’s opinion is very important and should be considered before making a purchase, reviewing the opinions of professionals is also important because they have a direct connection with the technology and all of its newest developments.

Making the case for the prevention of pirating music is easy once you consider all the risks involved.

Aside from being illegal, music piracy is harmful to the music industry, and it hurts businesses and consumers as well.

One other thing downloading music illegally from other users on the Internet can do, is harm your computer.

If people who download music illegally are able to go undetected by those who are looking out for those engaging in music piracy, you may think you got away clean. That may not always be the case.

There are Internet users who find pleasure in spreading harmful viruses to other’s computers. One easy way for them to spread a virus to a number of users at once, is to attach that virus to a music download.

Unknowing participants in the practice of illegally sharing, uploading, and downloading music may be putting their computer at risk for viruses that range from minor annoyances to a complete wipe-out of their hard drives.

Those who attach computer viruses to downloads, intend to spread the virus from one computer to another. Since those who pirate music on the Internet are already breaking the law, they have no problem knowing that they are wreaking havoc to other users computers by attaching a virus to a file they are illegally sharing.

Those who download music illegally may believe their computers are safe from computer viruses because they have the latest and most recently updated anti-virus programs. Unfortunately, there are just as many computer viruses developed, as there are anti-virus programs, daily.

One anti-virus program or another can catch not every facet of computer viruses, and they may still damage your computer in some form.

Computer viruses attached to music downloads on sites illegally sharing files can:

• Corrupt or erase data on computers

• Spread to other computers connected to your computer at home

• Delete everything on your hard drive

• Spread to other computers at your workplace

If you do the crime of music piracy, are you willing to do the time or pay the price?

Sharing music illegally is nothing new, even though sharing it online may be the latest way to do so.

Music retail sales plummeted in recent years, due to the fast and easy way of illegally downloading music on the Internet.

However, copying and selling Cd’s to friends, to vendors on the street, or to anyone else who did not pay for the CD, called bootlegging, has been going on for years.

The music industry has begun seriously cracking down on the illegal sale of music. This is evident in the 2007 case of a Minnesota woman who was taken to court for illegally downloading music. The Recording Industry Association of America charged her with copyright infringement.

Many people, particularly teenagers and college students, may believe that there is no harm in illegally downloading music, because so many others are willing to share music files. They do not physically see the people they are ripping off, and believe that they are not hurting anyone.

That is where the music industry must step in, but when they do, the music industry has already suffered.

What most people do not realize is that if the music industry is able to catch more people infringing on the artists copyrights, it will become next to impossible to obtain music illegally on the Internet, which is as it should be.

However, this will also have an impact on the offline sale of music. Because the music industry will have to take precautionary measures to prevent their Cd’s or albums from copyright infringement, retailers will have to pass on the cost to do this, to the consumer.

Therefore, why you should consider refraining from downloading music illegally comes from the risks involved:

1. It hurts more people than you could possibly imagine

2. It is illegal

3. If caught, you could land in court

4. Favorite artists may hesitate to release new music

5. Record and CD sales will rise in price

There are harmful habits that once you begin, are extremely hard to break.

Even though pirating music may not be physically harmful to people, it can become addicting and it is illegal.

Like smoking, if you never start you will never have to go through the emotional and physical pain of trying to quit. While stopping the illegal practice of music piracy is incomparable to smoking, it is equivalent to it in another way.

Once you start to share music files that you do not own the copyrights to, the more music you want to share and receive, because you receive a reward from it, but never a punishment.

If you think about what pirating music involves before you ever download an illegally shared music file, you might not ever do it to begin with.

Whenever an artist writes a song, it belongs to the artist. When people, not authorized to copy and share that song with others at no cost, they are violating the US copyright law.

Additionally, if you purchase a song and decide to give it away, you are in violation of that same law.

For parents of teenagers and children in college, your responsibility is to explain to them that sharing music files illegally is a crime. Explain why it is a crime and what could happen if someone catches them.

Parents may have to place parental controls on their children’s electronic devices where they can download music, to disallow sharing.

Since children use the Internet at a younger age than ever before, it is easy for parents to explain music piracy to them in the same way they explain other immoral or illegal acts, such as shoplifting.

The music industry has had to face a number of issues with the ability for consumers to share files and download music from the internet. Some people have found ways to download music illegally and to share it without permission. The companies struggle to keep software current that can prevent this kind of activity from occurring. Though people enjoy getting music for free, it does create a number of issues for the artists that create the music.

Music artists, especially those new to the stage, depend on the income that they generate from music sales. Each time a song or album is purchased, they are paid a royalty fee, which is a percentage of the sale price. When music is passed around illegally by file sharing, they lose a portion of their income from lost royalties. The music companies also lose their portion of the sale as well. They pay for the marketing, distribution and recording of the music that is being illegally downloaded. They are unable to recover some of their costs when this happens.

This situation has forced government and legal authorities to pass stiff consequences for those who engage in illegal downloading and file sharing. Stiff fines, jail time and a combination of both can be brought down on those who are caught. A few years ago, this problem reached a forefront with the Nabster controversy. Thousands of people were illegally downloading music through the site, and steps had to be taken to stop it from occurring.

Now that most music is available for download online, the prices for many albums have become more reasonable, and people can buy one song if they choose. People can mix and match their own music without having to buy the whole album. This can help to curb some of the temptation to engage in unlawful activities.

Pirating music has become a sideline for many individuals, especially when it comes to the hottest album that has just been released. Authorities are challenged to find these people, but laws have been put in place that provide stiff penalties for those that are caught engaging in this kind of behavior. Those that are tempted to take part in pirating should know what they are getting into, and be prepared to suffer those consequences when caught. Many people have been caught, and have had to pay the price.

Laws within the last few years provide greater protection to music artists and companies, as they are now able to add more software to block possible piracy of their products. The music companies are playing catch up as those in the general public find new ways to get around them. For example, for a copyright law that is violated for copying and illegally distributing music, the law allows damages in the range from $750.00 to a ceiling of $150,000 to be collected by the suing party. One case had an individual who allowed to settle out for $2,000 for conducting pirating of various music. The law does allow for someone to settle out, as this person did, but the penalty was still high.

Those who pirate music may also serve jail time as well, in conjunction with a fine, depending on the severity of the crime. There is controversy about people being allowed to make copies of their own music, but distributing it illegally is where they start to get into trouble. If you are considering taking part in pirating, it is wise to stop and consider the consequences and the repercussions of your choice. There is a high chance that you will get caught, and the penalties are not worth the songs that you send out without permission.

Piracy of music and movies, along with counterfeiting, costs the American government approximately $250 billion each year. This includes loss of tax revenue and the manpower to fight this kind of crime. This does not even include the loss of sales revenue to retailers, both on and offline, musicians and music companies that produce the music. Piracy is a common event in today’s digital world, as people copy and distribute the latest music underneath the rug of honest sales. The cost is high not only to those who make it, but can be to those who steal it.

This activity led to the signing of an anti-piracy law in 2008, which protects copyrighted material within the United States and abroad. It stiffened the penalties for those that are caught in the act of piracy and allows more room for the music industry to take people to court. The bill did draw some controversy with various groups and the general public, but passed through on the president’s signature. Authorities can also enforce the laws that are already on the books for copyright violations. These can bring fines and jail time, depending on the nature of the crime.

Authorities have also had to beef up their staffing, technology and resources in order to fight piracy. This has led to increased costs for law enforcement, which can be strained in an economy that is struggling. The police and the industry have to try to stay ahead of new programming technology and those who know how to get around them. As piracy continues to be a tough issue for the government and the music industry, costs may mount as enforcement becomes more challenging in a world of ever changing technology. There will have to be new strategies come up with in order to fight this kind of illegal activity.

There are numerous alternatives to music piracy, allowing those who want to get good music within their budget. Many people who pirate music argue that compact discs and albums are priced too high, and that they cannot afford to get the music they want. This argument is hard to hold up when there are numerous ways to get music legally and affordably.

One alternative to piracy is Itunes. Apple has come up with the perfect way to get the music you want without having to download it illegally. You can downlowd the Itunes application for free on your computer, and you are ready to go. There are thousands of albums of all types, and you can even listen to a section of the music before you buy. You also don’t always have to buy the whole album. You can select a favorite song out of the many included, and get it for as little as $1.00. Each song can be sampled first, so that you know what you are buying.

You can also shop online at various music stores that allow you to download the music directly from their sites. This removes much of the cost that was associated with packaging and distribution, so many albums are now priced very reasonably. You can search for an album and get a hundred hits on where you can buy an honest copy. You can even upload your songs onto your music player to take with you. This has the benefit of avoiding the steeper costs of getting caught downloading pirated music, which will definitely be more than you can afford to pay.

You can also buy used compact discs and rip the songs onto your computer for your own personal use, but not to share. This saves you money on buying a new album for a higher price. If you use your creativity, there are numerous legal alternatives to music piracy.

The music industry and the general public have clashed over the last decade as they fight over the copying of music via the internet. The general public often is upset at what they deem to be high prices for music albums, as the music industry works to hold its place in the market as music is increasing sold online. Compact discs are quickly becoming a thing of the past, and now you can easily purchase music from a number of online retailers. Some consumers have found ways to get around industry safeguards to copy music and distribute it illegally.

As the clash has reached a forefront, such as with the episode a few years ago with Nabster, the authorities have entered the fray with new legislation. As laws become stiffer, the controversy has heated up. Some feel that the penalties of the newer legislation is too stiff, and that there are already sufficient penalties in place with copyright laws. The music industry wants more ability to go after piraters, especially in courts of law. Legislation in 2008 has made this more of a reality, and pirating individuals are paying steep fines for their crimes.

Finding a happy medium has been difficult, as advances in software and the skills of piraters has gotten better. The industry has to keep on the forefront of safeguards to protect the music that it produces and sells. The line between copying illegally and getting music legally can be blurred, and there will have to be more definitive lines drawn as technology continues to change. Some retailers have offered music at cheaper prices and allow consumers to pick what songs they want to buy, instead of having to purchse the whole album. Whether or not these strategies can stem the flow of pirated music remains to be seen.

Regulate Software Companies

To regulate software companies or not to regulate, that is the question.

Time to Regulate?

It is time to regulate software companies? While some experts worry that to regulate software companies would, in effect, hold back their innovation, there are others who believe that it is the only way in which to effectively curtail flaws in the software and make it more impervious to virus attacks.

Innovation is in the very fiber of the software industry, and to hold this back by regulation would be a crying shame, but that doesn’t alter the fact that some very important strides need to be taken in order to reduce the virus attacks which are becoming increasingly sophisticated and damaging to the software industry as a whole. These breaches of security for governments, companies and individuals alike, have caused a massive increase in identity theft and related crimes. A compromise therefore needs to be reached, and quickly, in this important worldwide issue.

Who Should Regulate the Software Companies?

Self regulation would be one answer, and there is a strong case for the whole software industry and software associations to come together and unite, developing guidelines in order to ensure that new software is produced with minimal flaws, rather than imposing strict regulations onto the industry which can only stifle the progress. Surely the experts who work in the industry are in a much better position to come up with ideas of how to minimize the risk of virus attacks and suchlike than government ministers and other officials. But who would monitor the progress, and what would happen to those who, inevitably, for whatever reason, took short cuts in their testing program and released software which was not thoroughly tested.

These guidelines, however, would need to be monitored closely to ensure that all parties were sticking to them sufficiently. Maybe it’s time that each software company was held accountable for their own software which would hopefully ensure that they would test the security and resilience of their software to bugs, Trojans and the like. Thorough testing of new software is expensive, but really does need to be implemented before the software is made available on the open market and opening up unknown risks to the consumer.

But who else can regulate software companies? Well, if governments did it, it would very probably be unworkable. In order to impose any sensible and workable regulations, for a start, it is important to know what you are talking about and be an expert in your field, plus it dramatically pushes up the price and many of the smaller software firms would possibly go out of business.

Unfortunately people tend to buy cheap if they think that they can get away with it, and if some of these new software packages are tested thoroughly which is reflected in the price, then they’ll be left on the shelf, so to speak, while consumers busily take their chance with cheaper but riskier products.

The Software Industry Coalition is dedicated to improving the industry’s processes, products and relationships.

The Coalition’s Goals

The Software Industry Coalition is a membership organization for the purpose of improving the software industry by means of the quality of its processes, products and relationships. This non profit organization, known as SoftCo exists in order to identify projects and help to build collaborative relationships within the software industry, and to actively address the many issues which are common to the software industry as a whole.

Goals of the Software Industry Coalition

Join forces with existing organizations to create a stronger voice for the software industry, which can help to increase and improve the credibility, stability and strength on any matters which are of a common interest to the software industry as a whole.

Help with the advancement of future software technology through collaborations with industry, government and academia, for the development of the software engineering process, quality and management leadership.

Develop and provide an information resource available for all executives, associations, companies, government and academia in order to enhance the future development of software on a global scale.

In 1992, the idea of the Software Industry Coalition grew from ideas which were presented to the Silicon Valley Software Working Group. This group realized that there was a void due to lack of leadership and industry collaboration in the software industry. Although there were many different associations and organizations, both on a local and national scale, for the purpose of focusing on specific issues, it was felt that many of the major issues which had been identified by the Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Software Working Group were not being addressed. The Software Industry Coalition was therefore formed in order to address the identified priorities, cooperatively with the existing organizations, for the mutual benefit of all in reaching goals and expanding the horizons within the software industry.

SoftCo was formed in the spring of 1993, and in May of that year was formerly incorporated as a California non profit making organization. Members of the Software Industry Coalition come from the many different corners of the software industry and associated organizations.

Independent Software Vendors

IT or MIS departments of companies, colleges and government laboratories which develop their own software for internal use.

Computer design and manufacturing companies

Networks designers

Systems designers

Professional associations

Consulting services companies

It takes a very competent staff to build and manage relationships within this diverse range of members.

Government Software Policies

Many government software policies now opt for the use of open source software instead of propriety software.

Using Software in the Government

Many government software policies around the world are opting for the use of open source software for use in public services. Open source software, as opposed to proprietary software, for example, Windows, gives users the freedom to read and alter code. With licenses which are usually free of charge, and the open facilities, this means that programs can be amended or modified, without fear of contradicting copyright laws or regulations, while saving governments millions per year in saved license fees.

Open Source Software

By using this open source software it can help to avoid many of the hidden costs associated with the traditional proprietary software, for example extra fees to pay for moving software from one place to another, hence there has been a world trend in government software policies embracing open source software in a collaborative manner.

By applying government software policies in favor of open source software this has really opened up the use to consumers around the world, causing much discussion and competition for proprietary software.

Software Regulation

Software regulation is trying to catch up with the swiftly moving software industry.

Software Issues and Concerns

It is important for the software industry to collaborate and for software regulation to unite the global software industry

The software industry has shown such massive growth over the last couple of decades or so, and in many ways, software regulation is now trying to catch up. There are different arguments for and against too much software regulation, but most people agree that this massive global network of companies do need to be regulated to a certain extent, not only for their protection, but also for the protection of the millions of consumers all over the world.

Some of the Problems for the Software Industry

The internet has opened up the whole cyber world to attack, from viruses, Trojan horses, worms, phishing and of course, unauthorized access to confidential details such as bank accounts and credit card information, and consequently identity theft and fraud are some of the fastest growing crimes in the world today. Firewalls and other anti-virus software have been developed to protect us from such attacks, but the software industry is in a constant battle to keep one step ahead of the extremely clever and cunning cyber criminals.

By constant and uniform software regulation the software industry is more able to develop adequate safety measures designed to protect personal computers and software from all over the world. There is a growing body of thought which believes that the software industry needs to develop even more secure programs, which will make the need for government regulation of the industry less vital. It can be, of course, more expensive to develop and produce software with a more secure code, but many believe that this is vital to the future security of consumers and their private and confidential information.

Introducing new government regulation is a costly process, and introducing software regulation will be no different, but it is important to weigh up the costs of the regulation against the costs of reduced profits.

Software regulation is extremely important for the future of the entire software industry and the safety of our information.

Collaborative Relationships in Software Industry

Mutually beneficial collaborative relationships in software industry have helped the industry to grow to what it is today

There are many collaborative relationships in software industry which are mutually beneficial to all concerned. Read on for more information about how software associations are benefiting from these relationships.

The Future of Software

The software industry has grown massively over the past couple of decades, and although there is obviously competition and rivalry between different software companies, many of them have largely realized that for continued growth and success collaborative relationships in software industry are vital. This doesn’t mean, however, that more can’t be done to achieve and maintain mutually beneficial collaborative relationships in software industry.

It’s reported that over 97% of senior leaders have the belief that collaboration is vital for success, yet only about 47% believed that they were skilled in the art of collaboration. This shows that there is a huge void which can be filled and boundaries broken down for more effective collaborative relationships in the future years, not only in the software industry, but in many other major worldwide industries too.

The Idea of Collaboration

Collaboration is the process whereby individuals, groups or organizations work together, with one goal of achieving the desired results beneficial to all concerned. Very often new companies can benefit greatly from collaboration with a well established, well known company or product, but in order for collaborative relationships in software industry, and any other industry to really work; they need to be equally beneficial to both parties concerned.

Collaborative Relationships between the Software and the Film Industry

The film industry has been around for decades and is master at spotting an opportunity and grabbing it with both hands. The collaboration between the software industry and the film industry has therefore been fully explored, with the release of games and other software packages now being made available well before the movie is actually in the cinema. This collaboration is a perfect model of industries working well together, the software industry, in developing the highly technical and innovative games and giving consumers an insight into what to expect from the film, and the film industry (apart from raking in massive profits from the software) are actually helping to promote the software industry along the way.

Many other industries have forged a mutually beneficial relationship with the software industry, just think about all of the sports games (golf, football, tennis, motor racing) which are generally directly linked to the governing body of each particular sport.

By collaborating with the software industry many other industries have opened up a whole new world of potential profitability for themselves, and many have jumped on the bandwagon with both feet first, and who can blame them?

Start and Software Association

You can get your business off to a flying start and software association can point you in the right direction.

Software is an increasingly important part of modern business, and contacting a software association can help you to choose the right software for your needs.

You can buy software (notice I said ‘buy’, software piracy is one of the biggest software industry issues being faced today) to do almost anything you need to do these days. If you want to open a new business, picking the right software can make the world of difference between success and failure before you even start and software association websites and consumer pages can really help you to see exactly what software packages you should be thinking about in order to really get your new business, whatever it is, off the ground.

Depending on your business will, of course, depend on the type of software package which would be right for you. Many internet based businesses can run very efficiently without premises, but it is important to have a good ‘shop front’ on the internet, and a correctly chosen software package can really make your website run efficiently and effectively. A database of stock can be extremely important, as can also be a database of customer and potential customer details – a business can quickly grow with a good database of clients to build on.

Increase Your Business Potential with New Software

If you already own a business but feel like there are some fundamental changes which need making in order to enhance its future development prospects, then a new and updated software package can be a good start and software association members will be able to advise you on the best packages around for your particular problem.

Don’t let lack of software hold your company back. Software packages and policies can make the world of difference to all accounting procedures, stock control, payroll and human resources management, in fact, there is a software package which is tailor made to suit your particular problem, and if there isn’t, there are plenty of software associations which will tweak a package just for you to make it fit.

Software Industry Issues

Software industry issues can be challenging, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be solved.

The software industry has many issues to face, both in the development of new software packages and successfully integrating this software to the consumers.

The software industry is going from strength to strength, but that doesn’t mean that they haven’t had to deal with rather a lot of software industry issues along the way. Innovative software has meant that many businesses can gain through more efficient and effective operational performance, rather than rely on new technological innovations. Let’s take a look at some of the issues which the software industry has had to face, and some of the issues which they have helped to solve through their development for other companies. Who knows, maybe your company could solve some of its present issues by utilizing different software.

Human Resources Issue Resolution

Many companies have found that the software industry has been a major factor in allowing them to handle personnel and human resources more effectively. With ever improving software packages to run payroll and human resources solutions, many companies can now benefit from these and form collaborative relationships in the software industry. Very often these software companies offer 100% in house support. Another option which many smaller companies are finding cost effective is to outsource all payroll and human resources to a professional company. Maybe your company could benefit from a new software package to streamline your personnel and human resources department? It can be a very economically sound option.

Software Industry Issues from Consumers

Software does not have to be difficult, does it? We all know that, with a little practice there is plenty of software out there that even the amateur user with extremely limited computer knowledge can come to terms with and negotiate successfully. Obviously the more complicated software packages are going to take training, but there is a school of thought that often (not always) some packages are developed which are so complicated, it is necessary to pay a very high price for an expert consultant to teach your staff how to use it, and then keep coming back to iron out the problems. Fortunately many software companies have realized that we’ve learned enough jargon and just want to run our companies efficiently and in the most cost effective manner.

Important Software Industry Issues Faced

One of the most difficult issues which are faced by the software industry is piracy. Although this is quite overshadowed in the press lately by piracy of the film and music industries, it is still a major problem for the software industry as a whole. Pirate software packages can often seem just as good as the real thing, but ultimately will not be as efficient or as reliable as the original software package. In order to safeguard your computer and the software industry, it pays to help safeguard against these software industry issues and use the original software package. Software industry regulation strives to keep up with these issues.
